Late Rally Not Enough for Women’s Basketball Against Colorado

Graduate guard Briana Peguero becomes the first Cougar to score six 3-pointers in Big 12 play
HOUSTON – Graduate guard Briana Peguero tied her career-high in 3-pointers made as the University of Houston Women's Basketball team dropped a tight, 73-63, decision against Colorado on Wednesday evening inside Fertitta Center.
The Buffaloes (17-8, 8-5 Big 12) earned their first victory against the Cougars (7-17, 1-12 Big 12) in Houston for the first time in series history.
Peguero led Houston with a season high 21 points and recorded six treys to tie her career-high in 3-pointers made. She is the first Cougar to score six 3-pointers in a Big 12 Conference game since Houston joined the league.
Junior guard Kierra Merchant recorded 13 points to extend her double-digit scoring streak to four games while junior forward Jorynn Ross posted 10 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting.
For the Buffaloes, Jade Masogoyo led all scorers with 20 points. Desiree Wooten was the second leading scorer with 14 while Anaëlle Dutat recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Logyn Greer was the fourth Colorado scorer in double-digits with 10 points.
Colorado used an 8-0 run to gain an early advantage. Merchant recorded six points in the opening frame, but the Buffaloes took a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams kept the second quarter close, and Houston clawed back to cut the deficit to three. Colorado closed the period on a 6-0 run to take a 32-23 lead into halftime.
Peguero opened the second half with a three-point play, but Dutat and Masogayo sparked a 7-0 run to push the lead to 13. Both teams traded baskets, but Colorado maintained control and led 52-39 at the end of the quarter.
Houston chipped away in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit to six after Ross and graduate forward Amirah Abdur-Rahim fueled a 6-0 run. Colorado made five of six free throws in the final 52 seconds to secure the 73-63 victory.

Houston will face Kansas inside Allen Fieldhouse at 4 p.m., Saturday, for its lone regular-season meeting against the Jayhawks. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
