Women’s Basketball Falls to Kansas

Graduate guard Briana Peguero scores 23 points against the Jayhawks
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team fell 85-68 against Kansas on Saturday evening inside Allen Fieldhouse.
Graduate guard Briana Peguero led Houston (7-18, 1-13 Big 12) with a season high of 23 points, including five 3-pointers made. Senior guard TK Pitts scored 16 points and led the team with six rebounds. Redshirt senior guard Kyndall Hunter rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
Kansas (16-11, 6-9 Big 12) placed four players in double figures. Jaliya Davis led all scorers with 25 points, S'Mya Nichols added 22, Elle Evans scored 18 and Lilly Meister recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cougars opened the game leading by as many as three thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Pitts and Hunter. The Jayhawks closed the quarter on top, 22-16.
Houston briefly regained the lead in the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Peguero and a jumper by junior forward Jorynn Ross. Kansas responded with a 10-2 run to build a nine-point advantage, but Houston scored the final four points of the period to cut the deficit to 41-36 at halftime.
Kansas used a 12-2 stretch late in the third quarter to extend its lead to 61-45. Houston answered with a 9-0 run from Hunter, Pitts and graduate forward Amirah Abdur-Rahim to pull within seven. Kansas scored at the buzzer to lead 63-54 entering the fourth.
Kansas opened the final quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 75-54 advantage. Houston faced foul trouble as Ross fouled out and Abdur-Rahim picked up her fourth foul. Peguero hit her fifth 3-pointer of the game, marking her second straight game with at least five made treys.
Kansas secured the 85-68 victory, its ninth-consecutive win against Houston.
