Jean hears name called by Colorado Rockies, McGinnis by New York Yankees
HOUSTON – Two Houston Baseball student-athletes heard their names called on Monday's portion of the 2025 MLB Draft. Left-handed pitcher Antoine Jean heard his name called in the MLB Draft on Monday by the Colorado Rockies in the seventh round and the 197th pick and infielder Connor McGinnis got the call from the New York Yankees in the 10th round and pick 314.
Â
Jean is the highest Cougar pitcher drafted since Robert Gasser in 2021 and he marks the fifth consecutive draft a Houston pitcher has been drafted.
Â
The Montreal, Canada native was named Houston's 29th All-American and is the first Cougar since Brad Lincoln in 2006 to earn multiple First-Team All-America honors in the same season.
Â
The lefty led the Big 12 in ERA, hits allowed per nine, strikeout-to-walk ratio, strikeouts per nine, and WHIP while finishing second in total strikeouts and sixth in saves.
Â
Jean became the first relief pitcher to win Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2025 and was Houston's second 100+ strikeout reliever in program history. The lefty posted 12 scoreless relief appearances and 13 5+ strikeout outings, while his 110 strikeouts were the most by a Cougar since 2018.
Â
In addition to those conference ranks, Jean was second nationally in strikeouts per nine (14.78) and hits allowed per nine (5.37), eighth in WHIP (0.90) 17th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.50) 18th in ERA (2.55) and 19th in total strikeouts (110).
Â
McGinnis is the highest Cougar position player draft pick since Jared Triolo in 2019 and just the third Cougar infielder to be taken in the first 10 rounds since 2017.
Â
The Frisco, Texas native led the team in doubles (14), batting average (.343), slugging (.610) and on-base (.450) while finishing seventh on the team in RBI (25) despite missing 24 games.
Â
Primarily playing second base, the left-handed hitter finished fifth on the team in multi-hit games (8) and posted five multi-RBI games. In the Big 12 Championship First Round win over No. 6 seed Kansas State, McGinnis went 3 for 5 with two RBI and two doubles.
Â
The second baseman's 10-game hitting streak, which was second longest on the team, included four multi-hit games before injury.
Jean is the fourth Cougar selected by the Colorado Rockies and the first since 2009. McGinnis is the third Cougar drafted by the New York Yankees and the first since 1992. Both Houston draft picks are the highest picked Cougars by either organization in MLB Draft history.
