Cougars Maul Wildcats, Advance in Big 12 Tourney

ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 11 seeded Houston Baseball team looked right at home in its first ever Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Championship tournament game winning 9-2 over No. 6 seed Kansas State on Wednesday night inside Globe Life Field.

Houston (30-24, 12-17 Big 12) received production from nearly the entire lineup with eight of the 10 hitters that had a plate appearance recording a hit while six different Cougars drove in at least one run.

Second baseman Connor McGinnis stroked a pair of doubles in his three-hit game while driving in a pair of runs and scoring twice. First baseman Xavier Perez and redshirt freshman Evan Haeger each drove in two additional runs.

The Cougars erupted for five runs on five hits in the second inning to give Houston a 5-2 lead. In the inning, Houston ripped three doubles and a pair of hits.

Kansas State (31-24, 17-13 Big 12) scored its two runs in the first inning and had the bases loaded in the fifth, but senior Andres Perez (3-1) capped his career-best outing with a bases loaded strikeout. Perez struck out four, tying a career high, while pitching a career-long 4.0 innings of scoreless relief work.

Perez, junior David Stich and senior Brady Fuller (1) combined for 8.0 scoreless innings and seven strike outs which allowed the Cougars to not have to use Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year Antoine Jean in the First Round game. Fuller pitched 3.0 scoreless innings for his first career save.

Houston advances to play No. 3 seed TCU in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU from Globe Life Field. The Cougars won the first game of the series against TCU, 3-2, on March 28.
