Jackson hits first collegiate home run, Cougars homer twice in third inning
ARLINGTON, Texas – Paul Schmitz earned his second win of the season as the Houston Baseball team erupted for a season-high 12 runs to beat UT Arlington, 12-6, and even the series on Saturday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Â
Schmitz (2-1) earned the win after spinning 5.0 innings while only allowing one earned run, one walk and striking out four.
Â
The Cougars (6-3) erupted for five runs in the third inning, hitting two home runs and two doubles. Catcher Riley Jackson led off the inning hitting his first collegiate home run. A pair of doubles from Broussard and second baseman Connor McGinnis added on and designated hitter Carsten Sabathia III hit his second home run of the year giving Houston its first 5+ run inning of the season.
Â
The two-homer inning marked Houston's first multi-home run inning of the season and second multi-homer game.
Â
UT Arlington (3-4) got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the third inning before threatening Houston's lead in the seventh inning.
Â
The Mavericks loaded the bases without recording an out in the seventh before scoring three runs to make it 6-5 Houston.
Â
The Cougars sent 10 to the plate and scored four runs in the eighth inning. First baseman Xavier Perez's first collegiate home run started the scoring and carousel on the bases before two wild pitches and a Mavericks fielding error pushed across the other three runs.
Â
Houston added two more runs in the ninth to pad the lead for closer Richie Roman (6) who entered in the seventh inning. Roman closed out his sixth save in his longest outing of the season, pitching 3.0 innings with five strikeouts.
