Cougars seek first win against Bears since 1995-96 season

HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball program is back at home as it welcomes rv Baylor for a mid-week matchup at 7 p.m., Wednesday, for its National Girls & Women in Sports Day game inside Fertitta Center.

ABOUT NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY
National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) began in 1987 as a special day to recognize women's sports. The day united premiere organizations and elite women athletes to bring national attention to the promise of girls and women in sports.

THE GAME

Houston and rv/rv Baylor meet for the 51st time in series history on Wednesday.
Houston leads the all-time series, 33-17.
The Cougars look to pick up its first win against the Bears since an 83-65 victory during the 1995-96 season in Houston, Texas (Jan. 27, 1996).
Wednesday marks the fifth meeting between Head Coaches Ronald Hughey and Nicki Collen.

LAST TIME OUT

With only six available players, Houston fell, 70-56, to UCF on Saturday afternoon inside Addition Financial Arena in Orlando, Fla.
Every member of Houston's starting five played all 40 minutes against UCF, who earned its first league win of the season.
Laila Blair tallied her ninth-straight game scoring in double figures and the 16th of the season. Summer Bostock made her first career start and tallied a career-high 12 points.

HEADLINES

The Cougars return six players from the 2023-24 roster: Kierra Merchant, Gigi Cooke, Avalon Miller, Maliyah Johnson, Peyton McFarland and All-Big 12 Conference Honorable Mention, Laila Blair.
Blair is now Houston's record holder for 3-pointers made with 237 career 3-pointers and most minutes played in program history at 4,071 minutes.
With 119 career starts, Blair needs three starts to surpass Porsche Landry's 121 starts for most games started in program history.
On Jan. 11, Blair moved up to third on Houston's all-time scoring list. She has 1,857 career points and needs 101 points to move into second to surpass Sharion Higgins' 1,957 points.
Avalon Miller (Achilles), Maliyah Johnson (ACL) and Kateri Poole (ACL) are out for the season.
Guard Leilani Augmon suffered a broken nose against Baylor (Jan. 17). The guard had surgery on Jan. 27 and is expected to return mid-to-late February.
