
Cougars in Second Following Opening Round

Kang tied for sixth as Cougars place three inside Top 9 at MountainView Collegiate
TUCSON, Ariz. – Three University of Houston Women's Golfers are inside the Top 9, helping the Cougars to a second-place, 2-under, 286, through the opening 18 holes at the MountainView Collegiate at The Preserve Golf Club on Friday. South Florida paces the 15-team field at 6-under, 282.
Houston junior Hyeonji Kang fired a 2-under, 70, to finish the Opening Round tied for sixth. The Jeju, South Korea, native, who is coming off her best finish (T-14th) last time out at The Show, sank three birdies and is just three strokes back of South Florida's Melanie Green who paces the 81-member field at 5-under, 67.
Houston sophomore Moa Svedenskiold is tied for ninth at 1-under, 71, helped by four birdies on the Front 9. The Halmstad, Sweden, native, who has earned three Top 10 finishes in seven events this season, is joined by fellow sophomore teammate Alexa Saldana in a six-way tie for ninth. Saldana, a Mexico City product, birdied her the first hole before playing even-par the remainder of the day.
Cougar freshman Maelynn Kim shot a 2-over, 74, highlighted by a 1-under, Front 9, to sit in a 14-way tie for 29th. Senior Nicole Abelar is one stroke back at 3-over, 75, and tied for 43rd. Competing as an individual, redshirt junior Brooke Morales is tied for 75th at 8-over, 80.
Texas A&M and Kansas State are tied for third at 1-over, 289, followed by Missouri at 2-over, 290. Arkansas (291), Tennessee (291), UNLV (292), Iowa State (295) and TCU (296) round out the Top 10.
The Cougars will play 18 holes on Saturday and once again Sunday from the 6,345-yard, par-72 course. Saturday's action begins with 9:45 a.m. (CDT) split-tee starts with a 9:45 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start for the Final Round on Sunday.

Following the MountainView Collegiate, Houston returns to the Lone Star state to compete in their final regular-season event at the Big 12 Match-Play Tournament at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., on April 8-10, 2024.
From there, the Cougars take their first steps in the postseason when they tee off at the Big 12 Championships, set for April 18-20 at The Clubs at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas. The winner of the league's annual postseason event receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals to be held at one of six sites across the counry on May 6-8.
