Redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke posts career-high 21 points against Owls
HOUSTON – Despite redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke's career high 21 points, the University of Houston Women's Basketball team fell to Rice, 60-48, on Thursday evening inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
For a second time this season, Houston (0-3) was led in scoring by Cooke with 21 points. Rice (3-1) had three in double figures, including Dominique Ennis, who scored 14 points in the game.
The first five minutes of the first frame resulted in a back-and-forth scoring affair, but Rice used a 6-0 run to control the quarter. Cooke scored nine of Houston's 10 points in the frame.
Sophomore guard Kierra Merchant logged her first points of the evening as she knocked down both free throws to cut Rice's lead, 19-12. Both teams continued to battle it out, but Rice ended the half with a 36-23 lead.
Early in the third quarter, Houston used an 8-0 run trim its deficit to five. After missing the first two games of the season, graduate Laila Blair scored her first points, contributing four points. Following the media timeout, Rice went on a 6-0 run to expand its lead by as many as 12.
In the final frame, the Cougars attempted to sneak back into the game by cutting the deficit to nine, but a 7-0 Rice run was enough to seal the victory for the Owls.
