Leilani Augmon knocks down two free throws with two seconds left to capture victory
HOUSTON – With two seconds left in the game, redshirt senior guard Leilani Augmon knocked down two free throws as the University of Houston Women's Basketball team defeated Houston Christian, 54-52 on Sunday afternoon inside Fertitta Center.
Houston (1-3) opened the game on a 7-2 run as graduate guard Eylia Love led the way with five first-quarter points. Despite much of the period being a back-and-forth affair, the Huskies (0-3) ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 16-12 lead.
Houston Christian remained in front for much of the second stanza, but the Cougars used a 7-0 run to head into the locker room up 31-29. Sophomore guard Summer Bostock led Houston with five points in the quarter.
The Cougars scored the first five points to open the third frame and used an 8-1 run to stretch their lead to nine. The Huskies responded with an 8-1 run to pull within two before Augmon knocked down Houston's first 3-pointer of the day to give the Cougars a five-point cushion heading into the final frame.
HCU opened the final quarter with two quick buckets, but a layup by fifth-year Peyton McFarland and a 3-pointer from Love pushed Houston's lead to six.
The Huskies used a 6-0 run to tie the game, but Augmon's free throws with two seconds left were the difference.
