Tennis Falls to #37 UCF in American Championship Quarterfinals

Cougars end season with 4-0 loss to Knights
ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Houston Tennis program concluded action at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Tennis Championship as it fell in quarterfinals to #37 UCF, 4-0 on Thursday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
The Cougars (14-9) advanced to quarterfinals after defeating East Carolina, 4-2 on Wednesday. #37 UCF (10-10) opened American Championship action on Thursday against Houston, and will now face Memphis in the semifinal round at 3 p.m. ET, Friday.
#37 UCF started the day picking up the doubles point with victories on courts 1 and 2. Sonya Kovalenko and Azul Pedemonti fell to Noel Saidenova/Nandini Sharma on court two (6-2). The Knights' Marie Mattel/Sophia Biolay grabbed the doubles point on court one with the victory against Laura Slisane and Sophie Schouten (6-4).
Houston looked to turn things around in singles play, but ultimately fell short against its ranked opponent.
Despite the match ending unfinished, sophomore Maria Dzemeshkevich led 5-4 in the second set on court two, nearly forcing a third set for the Cougars.
#37 UCF picked up wins on courts 4, 5 and 6 to clinch the victory. Court 5 was decided first with Jaleesa Leslie defeating Schouten (6-2, 6-1). On Court 4, Gabriela Cortes fell in both sets (6-2, 6-2) against Sharma. Anique Kattenberg defeated Kovalenko (6-3, 6-2) on court 6 to seal the victory for the Knights.
