Memphis late 3-pointer in final minute snaps Cougars four-game winning streak
HOUSTON – Tiara Young's 11 points led the University of Houston women's basketball team in a close game, but the Cougars fell late in a 45-44 loss against Memphis on Wednesday at Fertitta Center.
The Cougars' (10-14, 7-4 American) maintained a tight lead stretching into the final minutes of the fourth quarter before a three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining in the game gave the Tigers (15-9, 7-4 American) the edge to complete the comeback. The loss snaps the Cougars four-game conference winning streak and marks the seventh loss decided by five points or less this season and the fourth consecutive loss by one possession.
Senior Britney Onyeje joined Young in double-digit figures with 10 points paired with four rebounds. Graduate forward Tatyana Hill led the Cougars on the boards with 11 rebounds and six points as she recorded her seventh double-digit rebound performance of the season, marking her third in the last five games.
A low scoring affair in the opening minutes saw the Cougars trail by one possession nearing the midway point of the first quarter. Momentum quickly swung Houston's way as it capped off the period on an 8-0 run to lead 13-7 heading into the second.
The Cougars pushed their lead thanks to an 8-3 run to lead 21-10. After the Tigers' scored consecutive buckets, Young took over the final minute of the half with a 5-0 run to close out the second quarter with a 26-14 lead for the Cougars.
Young led all scorers at the break with seven points, all coming in the second quarter while Hill controlled the paint and glass with six points and eight rebounds.
The Tigers tightened the gap late in the third by outscoring the Cougars 12-6 in the period, as Houston remained in front 32-26 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Cougars snapped a seven-minute scoreless skid with back-to-back 3-pointers from Onyeje to open the fourth quarter and lead 38-28. The Tigers made a late push to keep the game within one possession and took their first lead since the first quarter. Despite a couple of chances late to regain the lead, the Cougars missed two shots in the dying seconds and fell short as time expired.
