Cougars pick up first home victory of 2022 season
HOUSTON – Midfielder Cordelia Cross opened up the way for the University of Houston Soccer program which used a 3-1 victory to notch the first home victory of the season Sunday evening against Rice at the Carl Lewis International Complex.
The Cougars (2-2-1) got on the board against their crosstown rival at the 34th minute with a goal as Cross blasted the ball from a few feet past the midfield line into the top corner of the goal giving Houston the 1-0 lead.
Rice's (2-4) lone goal of the match was scored by goalkeeper Bella Killgore in the 44th minute after a Cougar foul just inside the 18-yard box which awarded Rice a penalty kick.
The Cougars continued to knock on Killgore's door in the second half and found a breakthrough in the 54th minute with forward Nadia Kamassah scoring her first goal of the season, assisted by midfielder Madison Dichiara.
Houston added another tally in the 62nd minute to seal the victory when defender Emma Clarke tapped in a score off a corner kick, assisted by midfielder Samantha Wiehe.
Goalkeeper Haley Woodward picked up her second win of the season, recording six saves against the Owls.
