Houston Falls in American Quarterfinals, 4-1

TULSA, Okla. – Houston's run at the 2022 American Athletic Conference Tennis Championship came to an end in the quarterfinals as the Cougars fell to No. 3 Tulsa, 4-1 on Thursday afternoon from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
The six-seeded Cougars (14-10) advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating No. 11 ECU, 4-0 on Thursday afternoon. Tulsa qualified for the quarterfinals as the No. 3 seed in the tournament.
With Thursday's win over Houston, Tulsa (16-7) moves on to face SMU (15-8) in The American Conference semifinals on Friday afternoon.
DOUBLES
Houston started off the day strong, winning the doubles point for a second consecutive day.
Azul Pedemonti and Blanca Cortijo Parreno were the first to win their doubles match on the day after defeating Valeria Rozenkova and Maria Berlanga, 6-2. Sophie Gerits and Laura Slisane clinched the doubles point for the Cougars by taking down Laia Conde Monfort and Shura Poppe, 7-5.
SINGLES
Following the doubles win, Houston needed three singles wins to clinch the match. The Cougars struggled to stop the Golden Hurricane in singles action with their nationally-ranked foes taking four of the six matches.
First to finish was Houston's Maria Dzemeshkevich on Court One, falling to Conde Monfort (6-3, 6-1). That was followed soon after by Houston's Slisane dropping the match against the Golden Hurricane's Poppe on Court Two (6-3, 6-3).
Houston's Pedemonti, Gerits and Gabriela Giraldo all won their respective first sets. Tulsa's Berlanga, Rozenkova and Lian Benedejic all rallied back to win their second sets, forcing Court Three, Four and Six to a third set.
Tulsa's Berlanga claimed the third set on Court Three against Pedemonti (6-2, 2-6, 2-6) giving Tulsa a 3-1 advantage over Houston.
All eyes were on Court Four as Tulsa's Rozenkova defeated Gerits in the third set (2-6, 6-3, 6-3) sending Tulsa to The American Conference semifinals against SMU.
On Court Five, Cortijo Parreno fell in her first set 6-1 against Tulsa's Lily Hutchings, but bounced back in the second set, 6-4 forcing a third set. Although the match was left unfinished, Cortijo Parreno was leading 5-3 in the third set.
