Houston looks to Saturday for redemption in Arlington

DALLAS – The University of Houston Tennis program fell to American Athletic Conference rival SMU, 4-0, in the league opener Friday from the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.

Houston (6-5) went into the match looking for its first road win of the spring season. SMU improved to 7-5 on the season with the win. The Cougars now look to rebound on Saturday at noon against UT Arlington.

The Cougars competed first in doubles play, followed by singles play. In the first doubles match, Laura Slisane and Blanca Cortijo Parreno fell 6-2 to SMU's Lana Mavor and Lexi Keberle. Elena Trencheva and Sophie Gerits were defeated by Drew Morris and Winslow Huth, 6-3.

Houston looked to turn things around in singles play, but fell short. On Court 4, Sophie Gerits put up a fight against SMU's Lana Mavor, winning the first set, 7-6. The second set was left unfinished, leaving Gerits unable to compete for the point.

Three of the singles' games were left unfinished with three wins for the Mustangs, clinching the match for the home team.

Houston will continue its weekend road trip at noon Saturday against UT Arlington from the UTA Tennis Center.

The Cougars will return to the Barbara Wallace Winton Tennis Facility to face Gonzaga at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11, followed by a trip to Boca Raton, Fla., to face Florida Atlantic at 9:30 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 13.
