Cougars to face six Power 5 teams, open conference play at home with ECU
HOUSTON – Houston baseball head coach Todd Whitting unveiled the Cougars 2023 schedule Thursday complete with 29 home games and six Power 5 matchups.
"The 2023 schedule is set up to prepare what I think is one of our best teams for a deep postseason run," Whitting said. "Our non-conference schedule allows us to build a strong NCAA tournament resume and will prepare us for our final run at our sixth AAC Championship."
Houston opens its 56-game slate from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park Field on Feb. 17 hosting Cal for a three-game series. The Cougars will then travel to San Antonio to meet UTSA on Feb. 22 before competing in the Kleberg Bank College Classic at A&M Corpus Christi. Houston will face Utah, A&M Corpus Christi and Incarnate Word in the tournament.
The Cougars welcome three Power 5 opponents to Sanders Field including Oklahoma (March 10-12), Texas A&M (March 14) and Northwestern (March 24-26) while also meeting Minnesota (March 17-19) at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Other non-conference home opponents include Texas Southern (Feb. 28), Southern (March 22), Rice (April 4), Sam Houston (April 11), Houston Christian (April 18) and Lamar (April 25).
Houston opens American Athletic Conference play with a high-profile matchup against East Carolina from March 31-April 2 after losing to the Pirates in the conference championship title game last season. The Cougars will also host USF (April 14-16), Wichita State (May 5-7) and Cincinnati (May 18-20) while traveling to Wichita State (April 6-8), Memphis (April 21-23), UCF (April 28-30) and Tulane (May 12-14).
Non-conference road matchups complete the schedule with trips to UTRGV (March 3-5), McNeese (March 21), Sam Houston (March 28) and Rice (May 3, 10). The Cougars will also play Sam Houston at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas, on May 16.
The American Conference Tournament will be hosted in Clearwater, Florida, at the BayCare Ballpark from May 23-28.
