Houston ace taken by Padres at No. 71 overall
HOUSTON – Houston starting pitcher Robert Gasser was selected with the 71st overall pick by the San Diego Padres on Day 2 of the Major League Baseball Draft on Monday afternoon.
Gasser, who was picked in Competitive Balance Round B, is coming off a dominant season as Houston's Friday night starter. The El Dorado Hills, California, native and First-Team All-American Athletic Conference honoree posted a 2.63 ERA and fanned 105 batters in 85.2 innings.
The southpaw tossed 5.0-plus innings in 13 of 14 starts and limited opponents to a .215 average. Gasser finished second in the AAC in strikeouts while fanning seven-plus batters eight times including a career-high 12 against Wichita State on April 1.
The two-time AAC Pitcher of the Week did not allow an earned run in five starts and permitted two-or-fewer earned runs in 10 of 14 starts. Gasser became the first Houston pitcher since 2015 to fan 10-plus batters in consecutive road starts, coming at Texas State and at Oklahoma.
Gasser is the 156th Houston student-athlete all-time to be drafted. He is the 27th Cougar to be taken in the top-five rounds. His selection also marks the second time in three seasons a Houston player has been taken in the top-75 overall picks (Jared Triolo, 72).
Gasser is also the seventh Cougar all-time to be selected by the Padres and the first since Matt Varner and Rickey Putman went in the 11th and 20th rounds, respectively, during the 2004 draft.
The MLB Draft continues Monday with the completion of rounds 2-10 on MLB.com. Tuesday's final rounds (11-20) begin at 11 a.m. CT on MLB.com.
