Cougar duo recognized for regular season
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Houston starting pitcher Robert Gasser has been named First-Team All-American Athletic Conference and outfielder Tyler Bielamowicz has been named to the AAC Second Team, the league office announced Monday.
Gasser ranks second in the AAC in strikeouts (95), ERA (2.41) and opponent average (.207). The El Dorado Hills, California, native has tossed 5.0-plus innings in 12 of his 13 starts and was twice named the league's pitcher of the week during the regular season.
The southpaw, who has climbed up MLB Draft boards this spring, has allowed two-or-fewer runs in 10 of 13 starts and struck out seven-plus batters in seven of his last 10 starts. He has registered four double-digit strikeout performances including a season-high 12 punchouts against Wichita State on April 1.
Bielamowicz has reached base in 15 consecutive games, the longest streak for a Cougar this season. The outfielder leads the team in OPS (.881), average (.310) and on-base percentage (.406). He also paces Houston in average (.267) and walks (17) in league games.
The duo will look to help Houston make a postseason push when the No. 7-seed Cougars face No. 2-seed Tulane at 3 p.m. CT Tuesday in the opener of the American Baseball Championship from Clearwater, Florida. The contest can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
