Robert Gasser tabbed AAC pitcher of week
HOUSTON – Houston starting pitcher Robert Gasser has been named American Athletic Conference pitcher of the Week while outfielder Steven Rivas has been named to the league's weekly honor roll, the conference announced Monday.
Gasser twirled another gem Friday at Memphis, leading Houston to a 2-1 series-opening victory. The El Dorado Hills, California, native tossed 7.0 innings, holding the Tigers to three hits and one unearned run alongside 10 strikeouts and no walks.
The southpaw was the only AAC pitcher to toss 7.0-plus innings and allow no earned runs in Week 13. The performance marked the fourth time this season Gasser has not allowed an earned run. It was also his fourth double-digit strikeout performance and third on the road.
Rivas batted .444 (8-for-18) on the weekend. His five RBIs and eight hits were tied for the third most in the league. He was the only AAC student-athlete to record a single, double, triple and home run over the weekend.
Gasser has been recognized by the AAC three times this season and twice as pitcher of the week with the last coming Week 1. Rivas, a native of Rancho Cucamonga, California, has been recognized twice including as player of the week following opening weekend.
The Cougars close the regular season at UCF, opening a four-game series at 1 p.m. CT Thursday. All four contests can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on Stretch Live.
