Houston Notes
Houston split its four-game series at Memphis over the weekend … the Cougars batted .273 as a team with 11 different student-athletes logging at least one hit … Houston starter Robert Gasser tossed another gem and Ian McMillan provided the go-ahead RBI-double in the seventh, leading the Cougars to a series-opening, 2-1 win against Memphis on Friday afternoon … McMillan's run-scoring, wall-double double was the third straight hit in the seventh for Houston and scored Steven Rivas, who started the rally with his second hit of the day … Houston's Ryan Hernandez and Steven Rivas each clubbed home runs but Memphis struck for eight runs in the seventh to overtake the Cougars, 13-7 and even the series on Friday night … Hernandez crushed a two-run home run in the fifth, putting the Cougars up 6-5 … two innings later, the Tigers took back the lead, sending 11 batters to the plate while taking advantage of four hits, two walks, two hit by pitches, one wild pitch and one passed ball … Houston erased an early four-run deficit, scoring seven of the game's final eight runs to overtake Memphis, 7-5 and grab the series lead on Saturday afternoon … the Cougars scored in four consecutive innings between the third and sixth … eight different batters recorded a hit including Tyler Bielamowicz who finished 2-for-4 … Houston closer Derrick Cherry was strong in relief, locking up his fifth save and second in as many days … Houston saw a four-run advantage slip away in the eighth inning as Memphis rallied to salvage a four-game series split with an 8-4 win in the finale on Sunday … Houston starter Matt Lazzaro, who entered the contest with 7.2 innings pitched on the season, tossed 6.0 scoreless frames, striking out eight batters alongside five hits and one walk … the Cougars close the regular season with four games at UCF beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday.
