
Comeback Falls Short Against Texas Tech

Cougars’ win streak snapped at eight
HOUSTON – After being down two sets, the University of Houston Volleyball team rallied to force a fifth frame, but the comeback effort came short as the Cougars fell to Texas Tech by a score of 3-2 (21-25, 18-25, 25-16, 28-26, 10-15) on Friday night.

Friday also saw the Cougars (8-2, 4-0 AAC) drop their first home contest of the season, as the team's winning streak ended at eight matches as well.

Sophomore outside hitter Abbie Jackson posted a match-high 29 kills to go along with 11 digs, marking her second double-double of the season and sixth of her career. She was one of four players to surpass the double-digit dig mark for the Cougars.

Junior right side hitter Kendall Haywood tallied a season-high nine kills off an efficient .412 hitting percentage. Freshman setter Annie Cooke commanded the offense, dishing out a match-high 47 assists.

Houston returns to conference play next on Thursday when the Cougars travel Tulsa, Okla., to square up with Tulsa. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.

- With the scored tied at seven, Houston scored four unanswered points to force a timeout from Texas Tech.
- Houston held a 21-19 lead, but Texas Tech rallied to close out the set on a 6-0 run to take the 25-21 set victory.
- Houston grabbed the first lead at 1-0 courtesy of a solo block from sophomore right side hitter Celeste Darling, but that was the only lead of the set for the Cougars who fell 25-18 in the set and trailed 2-0 in the match at the intermission.
- Defense played a pivotal role for Houston in the third, holding the Red Raiders to a hitting percentage of just .107 in the set.
- The Cougars held a steady advantage early on, but a 6-0 run from Tech forced Houston to call a timeout, trailing 11-9.
- That timeout sparked a 5-0 run of Houston, which never looked back from that point, as the Cougars went on to win 25-16 and force the fourth set.
- A competitive frame saw the score tied 11 times and the lead exchanged on four occasions, as neither team held a larger lead than five in the set.
- Jackson's ninth kill of the set sealed the 28-26 victory and forced a fifth frame.
- Texas Tech jumped out to a four-point lead at 8-4, resulting in a timeout from Houston.
- The Cougars closed the gap to three as late as 10-7, but the deficit was too much to overcome to complete the comeback.
