
Houston Takes Down Tulsa in Four Sets

Cougars start conference play 5-0
TULSA, Okla. – The University of Houston Volleyball team opened its weekend with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 25-19) win over Tulsa on Friday evening.

With the win, the Cougars (9-2, 5-0 AAC) remain the only undefeated team in the American Athletic Conference West Division. Friday's win over the Golden Hurricane (2-3, 2-3 AAC) also marks the second time in as many years, the Cougars have started conference action 5-0.

Led by sophomore Abbie Jackson's match-high 18 kills, Houston saw four different players reach the double-digit kill mark including juniors Kortlyn Henderson (14), Kendall Haywood (14) and Isabel Theut (11). Freshman Annie Cooke, guided the offense with 58 assists, the sixth-most in program history in a four-set match.

Defensively, junior Torie Frederick anchored the back row with a career-high 32 digs, tied for third-most in program history in a four-set match. She was joined by freshman Sarah Martinez (17), senior Abby Irvine (11) and Jackson (10) as those to surpass the double-digit dig mark. Jackson's double-double is her third of the season and seventh of her career.

- Jackson capped off a 3-0 run from the Cougars to put Houston in front 5-2.
- A dump off from Cooke stretched the lead to four for the Cougars at the 9-5 mark forcing a timeout from Tulsa.
- After the Golden Hurricane closed the deficit to two, Houston responded scoring four unanswered points to go up 17-11, where the Cougars never looked back in route to the 25-20 set win.
- In a tightly contested set that saw a total of eight ties, neither team was able to hold a significant lead.
- Henderson kept Houston within striking distance, as her seventh kill of the match brought the Cougars within a pair at 9-7.
- Once Theut sparked a 3-0 run, sophomore Rachel Tullos tied the match at 17 with a kill of her own.
- With Houston trailing 21-18, Houston found a rebutall to score seven unanswered points and win the set 25-21 to take a 2-0 match lead.
- Houston grabbed its first lead of the set, courtesy of the fifth kill of the match from Theut.
- Tulsa was forced to call a timeout, after Houston opened a five-point lead at 18-13.
- After trailing 24-23, Tulsa came back to score the final three points and take the 26-24 set win.
- Back-to-back kills from Jackson and Theut put Houston ahead 7-2, resulting in a timeout from the Golden Hurricane.
- Tullos took advantage of an incoming free-ball, slamming home her ninth kill to keep Houston ahead by five.
- Tulsa fought back to trim the Houston lead to three at 21-18, but following a timeout from UH, the Cougars battled to score four of the final five points and win 25-19 to take the 3-1 match victory.
