
Sweep Marks 21st Win, Most Since 2000

Houston sweeps Tulsa for 21st win, 11th conference win
TULSA, Okla. – The Houston volleyball program won its 21st match on Sunday at Tulsa, the most wins by the Cougars since 2000. The Cougars' (21-5, 11-3 AAC) sweep of the Hurricane (12-11, 7-7 AAC) marked the team's ninth sweep of 2021.
The win is the 11th in American play this season, a program record since joining the American Athletic Conference and the most since 2011 in Conference USA.
Junior Abbie Jackson led the match with 15 kills on a .275 attacking percentage and sophomore Kate Georgiades led the match with 14 digs. Jackson also added a match-best four aces. As a team, the Cougars posted their best offensive attacking percentage since Oct. 17 against Memphis with a .289 attacking clip against the Hurricane.
Sophomore setter Annie Cooke led three teammates to .300 attacking clips or better. Senior Isabel Theut hit. 600 in the match with seven kills, junior Celeste Darling hit .429 with seven kills and junior Rachel Tullos hit .300 with five kills.
Houston rode an 8-0 run at 10-10 to take an 18-10 lead in the middle of the first set. The run included three-straight aces and a couple of kills by the Cougars.
Up 5-0 to start the second set, Houston saw Tulsa claw back into the set and end up winning the set 27-25. However, an overturned call via challenge awarded UH the point. With the score now 26-26, the Cougars rattled off two-straight points to flip the script and take a 2-0 set lead.
The Hurricane led 10-6 in the third set and then 17-13 but Houston would not go away easily. A 7-1 run by UH gave the Cougars the lead and forced Tulsa into a timeout. Three-straight Tulsa attacking errors gave Houston a 24-20 lead, which the Cougars would use to win 25-22.

The Cougars return home and host East Carolina and Cincinnati Nov. 12 and 14, both at 1 p.m. CT. The Sunday, Nov. 14 match will be Houston's Senior Day where the program will honor four seniors, Peanut Childers, Torie Frederick, Kendall Haywood and Bridget Wallenberger.
