Cougars out-hit Mustangs, ultimately fall at SMU
DALLAS – The seven-match winning streak for the Houston volleyball team ended on Sunday at SMU in a 3-1 loss (27-25, 25-17, 17-25, 23-25).
Senior Kennedy Warren got off to a blistering start for the Cougars in the first set, dispatching nine kills in the first set alone. Warren's 19 kills is a season-high and is one off of her career-high.
As a team, the Cougars (25-6, 13-4 AAC) out-hit the Mustangs, .184-.178 on the match, out-dug the Mustangs, 93-90, and out-blocked the Mustangs nine-seven.
In the first set, Houston posted 18 kills and hit .208 and had set-point at 24-23 but a three-point run by SMU (16-12, 12-6 AAC) at the end gave the set to the home team.
SMU had the better attacking hand in the second set, as the Mustangs cruised to a 25-17 set win. Warren led the team with four kills in the set.
The Mustangs started hot in the third set but the Cougars battled back with a five-point run at 16-16 to force SMU into using both timeouts. Houston ended the set on a nine-one scoring run.
Houston started hot in the fourth set, forcing SMU into a timeout at 7-2 and then again at 13-6. Multiple scoring runs by SMU allowed the Mustangs back into the match but did not take their first lead of the fourth set until 23-22.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return home to face South Florida and UCF on Wednesday, Nov. 24 and Friday Nov. 26, respectively. Both matches will be at 7 p.m. CST in the Fertitta Center.
