Straight sets victory marks 25 wins for fourth time in program history
HOUSTON − After losing a seven game win-streak last week, the Houston volleyball team bounced back into the win column with a sweep at home against South Florida on Wednesday (25-23, 25-20, 25-18).
The victory gives the Cougars their 25th victory of the season, only the fourth time the feat has been reached in NCAA program history. In conference play, the Cougars improve to 15-4 and sit in second-place in the AAC while also picking up their 13th sweep victory of the season.
Five Cougars finished the match with five or more kills, as junior Abbie Jackson led the team with 15 kills of the 45 total. Sophomore setter Annie Cooke with 33 of the team's 40 assists and sophomore libero Kate Georgiades finished the match with 24 of the team's 55 total digs.
The Cougars jumped out to a hot start in the first set with a 7-3 lead. Both teams continued to exchange points on the attack as the Bulls evened the score at 19-19. After the Bulls briefly took a one point lead to force a Houston timeout, the Cougars regrouped and took a first set victory at 25-23 to go up one set to none. The Cougars finished the set with 19 kills and a .413 kill percentage.
The start of the second set was close between both teams as the Cougars led 12-11 at the first timeout. With neither team leading by more than three to that point, the Cougars held on to the lead at 18-15 after forcing a USF timeout. Nearing the end of the set, the Cougars broke through and won 25-20 to take a two set to none lead. Houston posted 16 kills and a .444 kill percentage in the set victory.
The third set got off to an even start once again with the Cougars taking the lead at 9-5. Both teams kept the battle going, but the Cougars remained strong on both ends of the ball while pulling away on an 11-4 run to extend the lead to 20-9. A late comeback 9-4 run for USF kept the third set running, but the Cougars capped the set off on the third match point to win the third set 25-18. The Cougars finished the third set with 10 kills and a .303 kill percentage while posting a .395 on the match
