Houston topples UCF for first time since 2017
ORLANDO, Fla. – For the first time since 2017 the University of Houston volleyball team topped UCF, beating the Knights 3-2 on Friday night (18-25, 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12).
Led by senior Abbie Jackson's 20 kills, Houston posted 60 total kills, one more than UCF. Right behind Jackson, senior Kennedy Warren added 12 kills and senior Kortlyn Henderson chipped in 10 more. Sophomore Kate Georgiades led the match in digs (19) and was supported by 17 digs from Warren.
The five-set win is the third-straight five-set win by Houston at UCF (2015 & 2013) and the first road win since 2015.
The Cougars came out firing in the first set, taking an early 6-3 lead off a couple kills by Warren and junior Rachel Tullos. The Knights took the lead back and pushed their lead midway through the set to 18-12 before taking the set 25-18.
The Knights kept the pedal to the floor in the second set, leading 15-11 at the media timeout. UH clawed back scoring four-straight to take a 16-15 lead thanks to two aces by Jackson. UCF took the lead back and held a three-point lead for most of the end of the set until the Cougars rattled off a 6-1 run to tie the match score 1-1.
The third set was close at the beginning until the Cougars went on a 6-2 run midway through the set and led 15-11 at the media timeout. Kills by Henderson and Warren gave UH a seven-point lead and forced UCF into a timeout at 20-13 UH.
UCF went on a 4-1 run to cut Houston's lead to just four points, but UH finished the set with three-straight kills, one by Henderson and two by Jackson to take the set 25-20.
The fourth set leaned Houston's way 13-9 after a Jackson kill, but the Knights charged back with five-straight points to take the lead 14-13 and then led the rest of the set from 16-15 to 25-22 UCF.
A back-and-forth fifth set saw two lead changes and five tie scores, but the only lead change that mattered was the one at 12-12 when a UCF attack error gave the Cougars the lead. An ace by Cooke gave UH match point, which Jackson put away to end the match.
