Cougars win fifth-straight match with 4-set win at South Florida
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Houston volleyball team has won five straight matches after taking down South Florida on Sunday in four sets (28-30, 25-23, 25-10, 25-12). The Cougars (15-3, 5-1 American) are in a three-way tie atop the conference standings following the win.
Once again, senior Abbie Jackson led all scorers with 16 kills and wrangled in 18 digs in the match. Jackson got offensive support from senior Rachel Tullos' 11 kills, a career-high, and senior Kennedy Warren's 10 kills. Both Jackson and Tullos posted five-block matches along with senior Isabel Theut's five blocks, helping the Cougars post 13 total blocks in the match.
The Cougars started slow in the first set, allowing USF to hold a lead for almost all of the set, with a four-point lead at 19-15 the largest lead for the Bulls. Houston answered with a run to cut it to 20-20. The Cougars fought off two set-points at 24-22, 24-23 and then led 25-24 but the Bulls fought off three UH set-points before taking the set 30-28 USF.
The second set started close and ended close, just like the first set. Back-to-back kills by Tullos tied the set score 10-10 and then gave UH the lead 11-10. A third kill in four points by Tullos gave Houston a 12-11 lead which the team pushed to a 19-14 lead. The Bulls powered through and tied the set at 23-23 before kills by junior Celeste Darling and Warren tied the match at a set apiece.
Darling started the third set and combined with Theut for a block to give UH a 6-2 lead and force USF into a timeout. Houston poured it on in the set, hitting .500 with 13 kills and three total blocks to win 25-10.
The Cougars kept that same ruthlessness in the fourth set, blocking five balls and tallying 12 kills on a .290 attacking percentage in the fourth and final set. Tullos had four kills on four swings and Jackson added five kills in the set as the Coogs finished the match with a 25-12 set win.
