Houston sweeps Temple, wins season series; Abbie Jackson becomes 20th Cougar to 1,000 kills since 1984
HOUSTON – History for junior Abbie Jackson! The outside hitter became the 20th Houston volleyball student-athlete since 1984 to tally 1,000 career kills as the Cougars swept Temple on Friday night (25-13, 25-20, 25-17).
Jackson entered the match with 997 career kills and tallied 1,000 out of the back row on an out-of-system set in the first game. The Gig Harbor, Wash. native tallied 15 total kills in the match and ranks 20th all-time in UH history in the category (since 1984).
Sophomore setter Annie Cooke set a new career-high in kills during the match with eight kills and was two kills away from a triple-double (8 kills, 29 assists, 13 digs).
As a team, the Cougars (19-5, 9-3 AAC) hit .270 in the match, recorded 12 blocks and six aces. The sweep marked the fourth conference sweep of the season for UH, and the second sweep of the Owls (5-17, 1-10 AAC) in 2021.
In the second set, Temple hung around until the 20-19 mark when Houston went on a 5-1 run to end the set. Jackson posted five kills in the set and junior Rachel Tullos added four kills of her own.
The third set started and ended similar to the first, with the Cougars pulling away midway through the set, not allowing the Owls to claw back. UH hit .378 in the set and did not commit an error with 14 total kills.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will travel to Wichita State and Tulsa for a pair of conference road matches. Wichita State brings an eight-match winning streak to the Nov. 11 meeting and then Houston will look to avenge a 5-set loss to Tulsa earlier in the season on Nov. 7.
