Cougars cap fall practice with annual series
HOUSTON – Houston Baseball closes its fall schedule with the annual Red-White Series set for Thursday, Friday and Sunday from Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. all three days. Admission is free.
RED TEAM
Pitchers – Derrick Cherry, Logan Clayton, Josh Coleman, Maddux Miller, Cameron Prayer, Colin Scanlon, Ben Sears, Dawson Smith, Bryson Walker
Hitters – Zach Arnold, Samuel Benjamin, Kade Brewer, Santiago Garcia, Ryan Hernandez, Cameron Nickens, Samuel Tormos, Skyler Trevino
WHITE TEAM
Pitchers – Jackson Dannelley, Jaycob Deese, Patrick Dunn, Kyle LaCalameto, Nathan Medrano, Cody Morse, Luke Robertson, Michael Ryhlick, Jose Torrealba
Hitters – Brandon Burckel, Will Duncan, Alex Lopez, Malachi Lott, Ian McMillan, Rey Mendoza, Dylan Post, Tab Tracy, Brandon Uhse
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Houston returns 17 student-athletes, including three positional starters from a season ago. On the mound, the Cougars welcome back three student-athletes who made four-or-more starts in addition to one of the nation's top closers in Derrick Cherry.
Cougar first baseman Ryan Hernandez, who led Houston in hits (52), multi-hit games (16), RBIs (37) and home runs (11), returns for his senior season. Redshirt junior Ian McMillan, regarded as one of The American's top shortstops, is also back.
Jaycob Deese and Ben Sears, who combined to make 31 appearances and 20 starts in 2021, provide a strong 1-2 punch on the mound. Sears finished second on the team for innings (67.1) while Deese's 52 strikeouts ranked second on the club a season ago.
The Cougars' 2022 roster features 24 newcomers including eight right-handed pitchers, seven southpaws, three utility players, two infielders, two catchers and two outfielders.
