HOUSTON – Despite drastic changes to their academic lives this spring, University of Houston student-athletes excelled in the classroom, setting school records for highest GPA (3.43) in a semester and the highest cumulative GPA following a spring semester (3.07).
Â
Although the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic forced the cancellation of all remaining spring events in mid-March and required students to attend classes in virtual settings for the rest of the semester, Houston student-athletes quickly adapted in these unprecedented times.
Â
All 17 sport programs finished with 3.0 or higher grade-point averages in the spring semester, a first in school history. Football, Men's Basketball and Women's Basketball student-athletes set team records for average hours earned in the spring semester. Houston's student-athletes passed an average of 14 hours during the spring semester, also a school record.
Â
Swimming and Diving led the way with a 3.69 GPA with Women's Golf (3.68) and Softball (3.67) coming in a close 2-3 during the spring semester. Soccer (3.61) and Tennis (3.60) rounded out the Top-5 leaders.
Â
Men's Golf led all men's teams with a 3.50 semester GPA with Men's Cross Country (3.39) and Baseball (3.38) following.
Â
Seventy-eight student-athletes received their academic degrees during the 2019-20 academic year. Football led the way with 19 graduates while Women's Track & Field finished second with 11.
