Three pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts
HOUSTON – Three pitchers combined to record 13 strikeouts on Wednesday night as the University of Houston defeated UNLV, 3-1, at Earl E. Watson Stadium in Las Vegas.

The Cougars moved to 6-9 overall, while UNLV dropped to 6-11.

The midweek series wraps up on Wednesday with first pitch set for 3:05 p.m. CT.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | The Cougars grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Steven Rivas used a one-out single to right and advanced to second. After a walk to Ian McMillan, Luke Almendarez laced a two-out RBI double down the left field line to plate Rivas, putting UH up 1-0. Four pitches later, Ian McMillan scored from third on a wild pitch.

3rd | An RBI single from the Rebels cut the lead down to 2-1.

9th | Ryan Hernandez's solo home run to right center field gave UH a valuable insurance run in the top of the ninth. It was Hernandez's team-leading fifth home run of the season. Â

HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Almendarez recorded his first multi-hit game of his career, finishing 2-of-3 with a RBI. The freshman also doubled in the seventh inning and finished the game with a pair of extra-base hits.
• Rivas finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base. The stolen base marked the first of Rivas' career.
• Hernandez belted his fifth home run of the season with a solo blast in the ninth. The junior was 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
• Tyler Bielomawicz led the game off with a single and provided a 1-for-4 effort.
• The Rebels outhit the Cougars, 12-6.

Pitching:
• Junior left-hander Nick Rupp took the no-decision and logged a career-high 4.0 innings in his second start of the season, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
• Senior right-hander Carter Henry (1-2) earned the win, providing 2.1 innings of relief work without allowing a run. Henry matched his season high with five strikeouts, while giving up three hits and walking one.
• Sophomore right-hander Derrick Cherry earned his third save of the season, tossing the final 2.2 innings. Cherry tied his season high with five strikeouts and gave up three hits without allowing a run.
• UH's pitching staff combined to strand 12 UNLV runners on base.
