Right-handed sophomore named to third team
HOUSTON – Houston right-handed sophomore Derrick Cherry has been named a third-team preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball, the publication announced Tuesday.
Cherry posted three saves and tossed 9.2 innings in four relief appearances a season ago. The Baytown, Texas, native, who also started eight games between left field and designated hitter, recorded a 1.86 ERA and limited opponents to a .263 average.
The former Goose Creek Memorial standout is entering his third season with the program. As a freshman in 2019, Cherry was named to both the Don Sanders Cup All-Series Team and the All-Silver Glove Series Team despite battling injuries.
Houston returns 19 student-athletes, including eight positional starters from a season ago, and welcomes 26 newcomers to its 2021 edition.
The Cougars were recognized at No. 48 in Collegiate Baseball's "Fab 50" teams for 2021 on Monday. The publication also listed Houston's 2020 recruiting class as tops in the American Athletic Conference and No. 24 nationally.
