Rivas, Tormos go yard as Team White takes Game 1
HOUSTON – Houston freshman Samuel Tormos and junior Steven Rivas connected on a three-run home run and solo homer, respectively, in the fourth inning as Team White opened the Red-White Series with a 4-0 win Friday night from Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.
Â
Rivas (1-for-3), who belted three home runs in his 14 games a season ago, started the scoring against sophomore reliever Derrick Cherry, clocking a 370-foot home run over the right field fence. Five batters later, Tormos (1-for-2) smoked a changeup over the left field wall.
Â
Team Red starter Robert Gasser and Team White starter Blake Schultz each tossed three scoreless frames. Gasser, a junior southpaw from El Dorado Hills, California, permitted two hits and struck out one. Schultz, a sophomore righty from League City, Texas, worked around four hits and fanned a pair.
Â
Redshirt junior right-hander Isaiah Blaylock recorded the final out in the six-inning contest, notching a bases-loaded strikeout to seal Team White's victory. Senior right-hander Andy Belcik fanned four hitters and did not permit a hit in 2 2/3 innings.
Â
The teams return to action Saturday at 6 p.m. Freshman right-handed Dravin Barber will take the ball for Team Red against Team White's sophomore southpaw Cameron Prayer. The series will conclude Sunday at 6 p.m.
