Cougars look to extend conference winning streak to three
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team opens a two-game conference road trip with a weekend matchup against Wichita State on Sunday. Tipoff against the Shockers is scheduled for 1 p.m., inside Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan.
Fans across the nation can see the Cougars take on the Shockers with the game airing live on ESPNU. Own The Series – Houston has never lost in the all-time series against the Shockers. The Cougars defeated Wichita State twice in 2004 (2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons) and two more times in 2018.
High Powered – Houston has consistently been one of the top offensive teams in The American over the past two seasons. In 2018-19, the Cougars' 73.2 points per game ranks them second in the league.
From Downtown – The Cougars continue to be a 3-point threat under Hughey. After setting the school record for 3-pointers made in each of the last two seasons, Houston has made 118 triples so far in 2018-19.
Watch Out For Her– Junior forward Dorian Branch averaged 15.0 points per game in the two contests against Wichita State a season ago. Branch was recently named to The American's Weekly Honor Roll.
HTown Lockdown – Houston continues to play lockdown defense this season. The Cougars have forced at least 15 turnovers in every game, and their 22.50 forced per game ranks 11th nationally.
SERIES vs. WICHITA STATE
Sunday's meeting is the fifth all-time in the series, and the Cougars own a 4-0 record against the Shockers.
The Cougars swept the season series a year ago, winning 73-55 in Houston on Jan. 2 before topping the Shockers in Wichita 73-62 on Feb. 3.
Houston is 2-0 all-time when meeting Wichita State on the road.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Houston enters Sunday's contest with an 8-8 overall record and a 2-1 mark in American Athletic Conference play. The Cougars have won four of their last five games including back-to-back wins over conference opponents SMU and Temple.
Houston's Jasmyne Harris paces the team as the only Cougar to average double figures in scoring at 16.2 points per game. However, Angela Harris (9.7 ppg.), Serithia Hawkins (9.4 ppg.) and Dorian Branch (9.1 ppg.) sit just off that pace.
Houston is averaging 73.2 points per game on 40.7 percent shooting from the field and a 29.0 percent mark from beyond the 3-point line. The Cougars allow 71.7 points per game on defense while letting opponents shoot 42.3 percent and 30.0 percent from the field and beyond the arc, respectively.
Serithia Hawkins leads Houston on the glass, pulling down 6.8 rebounds per game. She recently became the sixth Cougar in program history to score 1,000 points and pull down 800 rebounds.
Houston has been one of the most active defensive teams in the country this season. The Cougars rank third in The American in steals (181) and second in steals per game (11.3) and turnovers forced per game (22.50). The Cougars' steal numbers rank 19th and 25th in the nation, respectively, while the turnovers forced average places them 11th in the NCAA.

Wichita State enters Sunday's matchup with a 7-10 overall record and an 0-4 mark in American Conference play. The Shockers have dropped nine of their last 11 contests including a 78-50 loss at SMU on Tuesday.
Carla Bremaud leads the Shockers in scoring, averaging 9.4 points per game, while Jaida Hampton sits second on the squad with 8.4 per night. As a team, the Shockers score 59.4 points per night while allowing opponents to average 63.6 per game. The shockers outshoot opponents 39.5 percent to 38.1 percent, but from beyond the arc, opponents hold the edge at 30.1 percent to 25.9 percent.
Wichita State is a balanced rebounding team, with Sabrina Lozada-Cabba holding the team lead at 5.9 boards per game. The Shockers average an even tie with opponents in rebounding at 36.6 rebounds per contest.
