2017 draft pick garners nod as utility infielder
MiLB Release
HOUSTON -- Former University of Houston Baseball standout Jake Scheiner was named a South Atlantic League Postseason All-Star, the league announced on Tuesday.
Scheiner, a 2017 fourth-round draft pick for the Cougars, was tabbed an All-Star as a utility infielder for the Lakewood BlueClaws, the Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Heading into Wednesday's doubleheader with the BlueClaws, Scheiner owns a .299/.370/.480 slash between time at third base, first base and left field. The native of Santa Rosa, Calif., ranks third in the SAL in batting average (.299), hits (130) and on-base percentage (.370), tied for fourth in doubles (30) and ninth in slugging percentage (.480).
He also has five triples, 13 home runs, 62 RBI, 63 runs scored and nine stolen bases.
With Houston in 2017, Scheiner became the program's first consensus All-American since 2006. Named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and The American Championship Most Outstanding Player, he led the league with 18 home runs, a mark that ranks second all-time for the Cougars in a single season and the most since 2002. He also led The American in RBI (64) and total bases (162).
A Dick Howser Trophy Semifinalist, Scheiner played in all 63 games, making 62 starts. He led Houston with a .346 batting average, .667 slugging percentage, 18 doubles, 22 multi-hit games and 18 multi-RBI games.
In the Houston Regional, he broke the program's NCAA postseason single-game RBI record with six RBI in a 17-3 win over Baylor on June 3, 2017, at Schroeder Park.
