
Lockhart Wins Cape Cod Championship

Rising junior wins summer league title with Wareham Gatemen
CHATHAM, Mass. -- University of Houston Baseball rising junior Lael Lockhart Jr. captured the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship on Monday afternoon.
Continuing a fog-suspended game from Sunday, Lockhart and the Wareham Gatemen defeated the Chatham Anglers, 9-2, at Veterans Park to sweep the series and win the Arnold Mycock Trophy. The native of Friendswood, Texas, finished 3-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and one run scored in the win.
On Sunday night, the Gatemen held a 4-1 lead after the top of the sixth inning when umpires suspended play. The Gatemen opened the best-of-three game series with a 5-3 victory on Saturday.
For the summer Lockhart appeared in 29 games for the Gatemen, turning in 22 hits, two triples, three home runs, 15 walks, 16 RBI, 12 runs scored and two stolen bases. He also made three appearances on the mound, finishing with a 1-0 record with three strikeouts and no walks.
With the Cougars in 2018, Lockhart appeared and started in 62 games between first base, designated hitter, outfield and pitcher. Named to the All-American Athletic Conference Second Team as a utility player, he finished the year with a .297/.425/.419 slash with 68 hits, 17 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 47 walks, 44 RBI, 43 runs scored and two stolen bases.
The southpaw made 13 appearances on the mound for the Cougars, including five starts. Lockhart finished with a 1-2 record with three saves and totaled 22 strikeouts across 20.1 innings pitched.
Lockhart helped Houston to a conference regular-season title and an at-large bid to NCAA Regionals.

The Cape Cod Baseball League traces back to 1885 and is the premier collegiate summer league in the nation. The league is comprised of 10 teams between the East Division --
Brewster Whitecaps, Chatham Anglers, Harwich Mariners, Orleans Firebirds and Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox -- and West Division -- Bourne Braves, Cotuit Kettleers, Falmouth Commodores, Hyannis Harbor Hawks and Wareham Gatemen -- spanning from Wareham to Orleans in Massachusetts.
The summer season features 44 regular-season games followed by playoffs. As the league celebrates its 133rd year, it counts more than 1,100 all-time alumni performing at all levels of professional baseball with a record number (306) former Cape Leaguers on Major League rosters in 2018.
