Houston Falls 8-7 to Sam Houston State

SUGAR LAND, Texas -- Houston Baseball's late rally fell just short in the Don Sanders Cup series finale as the Cougars dropped an 8-7 decision to Sam Houston State at Constellation Field in Sugar Land on Tuesday.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 28-17 on the year and dropped the Don Sanders Cup, 2-1 as Sam Houston improved to 32-13 on the year.

- Connor Hollis walked in the third to extend his on-base streak to 18 games.
- Tyler Bielamowicz singled in the fourth inning to extend his on-base streak to 18 games.

Houston tallied 11 hits, led by a two RBI night from Cooper Coldiron and Joe Davis, each with a two-run hit. Nick Slaughter and Charlie Bartlett each had an RBI-hit in the ninth and Grayson Padgett and Lael Lockhart Jr. finished with a multi-hit game.

Lael Lockhart made his fourth start of his career and allowed three runs on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 1.0 inning of work.
Senior Kyle Ott came in relief with two runners on in the second inning and stranded the pair with two strikeouts.
Nolan Bond took over in the third and went 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing four runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. He would suffer the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year.
Hunter Edwards relieved Bond in the fifth and lasted 2.0 shutout innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts.
Fred Villarreal worked 1.2 innings, allowing three walks and two hits, while striking out one.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Sam Houston State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after a lead off walk, single and a three-run home run.
5th | Houston plated three runs in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3, highlighted by a two-out, two-RBI single by Cooper Coldiron, plating Jared Triolo and Tyler Bielamowicz, who each walked. Connor Hollis reached on an error and scored on a bases-loaded walk by Lael Lockhart Jr.
Sam Houston State responded to the Cougars' scoring in the top half of the inning to plate four runs on four hits to go back on top, 7-3.
6th | Joe Davis drove in two runs on a two-run double off the right center wall to make it 7-5 in favor of Sam Houston State, plating Grayson Padgett and Jared Triolo, who each singled.
7th | Sam Houston State added to its lead with another run in the seventh with an RBI-single extend lead to 8-5.
9th | Houston made it interesting in the ninth, plating two runs to make it 8-7 on an RBI-single by Nick Slaugter and an RBI-double by Charlie Bartlett, but Sam Houston State was able to escape the rally and strand a pair of Cougars to end the game.
ON DECK
Houston will return home to host American Athletic Conference foe UCF in its final home weekend series of the year. The three-game set will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, continue at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and wrap at 1 p.m. Sunday.
