Houston Drops Series Opener to USF, 9-6

HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball rallied late, but it wasn't enough to overcome early runs by USF, falling in the American Athletic Conference series opener at Schroeder Park, 9-6 on Friday.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 17-12 on the year and 4-3 in league play, while the Bulls improved to 21-9 and 5-2.
HOUSTON HITS
- Jared Triolo has reached base in 28 straight games and has a hit in 14 straight.
- Lael Lockhart Jr. has reached base in 15 straight games.
- Connor Hollis belted his second home run of the year, a solo shot to lead off the sixth.

Jared Triolo tied his career-high with four hits to lead the Cougars offensively. He added a run and two RBI. Connor Hollis belted his second home run of the year and scored three runs, while Joe Davis plated a pair on a hit.

Starter Trey Cumbie went 3.2 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts. He suffered the loss and fell to 3-2 on the year.
Senior Kyle Ott took over in the fourth and retired the lone hitter he faced. He returned in the fifth and finished with a Houston career-long 3.0 innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits.
Junior Nolan Bond tossed 1.0 shutout inning in relief with one strikeout.
Sophomore Fred Villarreal took over in the eighth with two outs and worked 1.1 innings, allowing just two hits with one strikeout.
KEY INNINGS
1st | USF jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run by David Villar.
3rd | The Bulls extended their lead with a pair of runs in the third on a double and two-run home run by Joe Genord.
4th | USF uses four hits, including its third home run of the game to plate five runs in the fourth to go ahead of the Cougars, 8-0.
Houston responded with one run in the latter half of the inning when Connor Hollis led off the inning with a walk, moved to third on a double by Jared Triolo and scored on an RBI-groundout by Lael Lockhart Jr. to make it 8-1.
6th | Hollis led off the sixth with his second home run of the year -- a solo shot to deep left -- to make it 8-2 in favor of USF.
7th | USF added another run to its column in the seventh on a walk and double for the 9-2 lead.
Houston plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run, two-out single by Jared Triolo to make it 9-4. He scored Tyler Bielamowicz, who walked and pinch hitter Ron Brown, who also walked.
Joe Davis then followed with his own, two-run single, scoring Triolo and Hollis to make it 9-6.

Houston and USF will continue its three-game series with Game 2 at 6:30 p.m. Saturday before wrapping at 1 p.m. Sunday.
