Davis, Cumbie Tabbed Freshmen All-Americans

LYNCHBURG, VA. (NCBWA )â€" Houston Baseball freshmen Joe Davis (First Team) and Trey Cumbie (Second Team) add to their impressive rookie resumes with a nod by NCBWA as the duo were tabbed to the Freshman All-America Team, announced by the organization Monday.
The duo adds their second national postseason accolade to their career honors after being tabbed Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball last week.

This marks the fourth straight year under head coach Todd Whitting that Houston had a Cougar named a Freshman All-American with Davis, Cumbie and Mitch Ullom (2016), Seth Romero (2015), Andrew Lantrip (2014), Justin Montemayor (2013) and Kyle Survance (2013) all earning the honor during the last four seasons.
Davis was named to the First Team, while Cumbie was a Second Team selection. These two were the only two representatives from the American Athletic Conference.

Davis enjoyed a banner freshman season where he was tabbed a First Team Freshman All-American, by NCBWA, a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, a Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, named American Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-Conference selection.
- Hit .331 in 2016 for second-best average on the team
- Led Houston in hits (78), doubles (17), home runs (14), RBI (58) and slugging percentage (.577)
- Broke the all-time Houston freshman home run record (14) and RBI record (58)
- Tied the all-time Houston freshman record in doubles (17)
- Tallied 25 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI games â€" both team-highs
- Started 58 of the 59 games either at first base or designated hitter
- Had a career-high four hits in a game (at Arkansas)
- Drove in a career-high six RBI in a 24-6 win over No. 15 Rice
- Hit first career grand slam in win over Rice and second vs. No. 11 Tulane
- Named to Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team
- Named American Rookie of the Year
- Named First Team All-American Athletic Conference (1B)
- Named to the American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team
- Named to All-Silver Glove Series vs. Rice
- Was a five-time American Weekly Honor Roll honoree
- Named American Player of the Week (April 10)
- Named to College Classic All-Tournament Team
Trey Cumbie
Lufkin, Texas / LHP
Freshman All-American
- Made 15 appearances with five starts as a true freshman
- Finished the year with a 1.29 ERA and a 5-2 record
- Totaled 56.0 innings and struck out 42, while walking just nine
- Held opponents to a .214 average
- Earned first career win in relief vs. Texas (April 12)
- Made first career start in a 4-3 win over Sam Houston State (April 26)
- Earned his second career win in an 8.0 shutout inning effort at Rice (May 10)
- Named the Silver Glove Series MVP after tossing 12.2 innings with 10 strikeouts and no earned runs vs. Rice in two appearances
- Pitched 7.0 innings, allowing just one run with a season-high nine strikeouts in an American Championship win vs. Cincinnati (May 24)
- Went eight appearances without walking a hitter
- Didn't allow an earned run through his first four appearances, totaling 5.0 innings with six strikeouts
- Named American Pitcher of the Week following a week where he earned two wins in two starts (at Rice, at Cincinnati)
