HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston began the morning in doubles action, with the duo of Mazzari and Dimitrova taking on de los Rios and Serio from UT Arlington. After weather delayed the beginning of the match, UTA held serve to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The Coogs answered with a hold of their own, but found themselves down 4-2 before fighting back to tie the match at 4-4.
The Cougars once again fell behind 6-4 only to storm right back and tie the match at six games apiece. Houston took the lead for good in the next game, winning four of the last five points to go up 7-6 before holding serve in the final game to win 8-6.
The pair advances to meet Savannah Durkin and Allison Ho of Rice at 9 a.m., Friday.
Ana Glumac was the first Cougar on the court in singles play, meeting Mila Milanovic from Sam Houston State. Glumac fell 6-2 in set one, but was locked in a dual with Milanovic throughout set two. Glumac opened the second set with a 2-1 lead before extending that lead to 5-3. However, Milanovic was able to battle back and force a tie-breaker, which Milanovic claimed to win the match 6-2, 7-6(6). Glumac will face Ansley Boarman of ACU on Friday.
Mazzari was back on the court for singles play in her match against Savedra of Incarnate Word. Mazzari wasted no time in set one, cruising to a 6-1 win. The second set was more of the same story, and Mazzari jumped out to a 3-2 lead before winning three of the last four games to claim a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
In her second match of the day, Mazzari met Vives from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Mazzari fell in a hard-fought set one 6-4, before digging deep and bouncing back to claim set two in a 7-6(3) tie breaker, forcing a third set. After a break in the final set, Mazzari jumped ahead 2-1, and then rattled off four of the next five games to complete the comeback 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.
Mazzari will face Dani Wagland of Texas in the Round of 32 on Friday.
Dimitrova put her perfect singles record on the line against Alba Cortina Pou of Texas Tech in the Round of 128 on Thursday. Cortina broke serve to open the match, but Dimitrova followed with a break, a hold and a break of her own to take a 3-1 lead. Three games later Dimitrova won the set 6-1. The two played the second set extremely close, with Dimitrova eventually taking a 5-4 lead. Dimitrova was able to hold serve and claim the set, winning 6-1, 6-4.
Dimitrova was in for a fight in her second match of the day against the No. 54 Blair Shankle of Baylor. Dimitrova cruised to a 6-1 win in set one before dropping set two 2-6. Dimitrova and Shankle left it all on the court in set three, with the match going down to the wire, but Shankle, the No. 2 seed in the tournament edging out Dimitrova 7-5.
