Houston Sweeps Islanders for Fifth Straight Win

HOUSTON - The No. 34 University of Houston tennis team stretched their winning streak to five matches on Wednesday afternoon as they swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 5-0, at the John E. Hoff Courts. The Cougars are now 9-4 overall.
"Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is always tough, because they have one of the best coaching staffs in the country," said Houston Head Coach Patrick Sullivan. "We knew what we were in for, and they pushed us hard on every court, but we were ready and responded well."
With inclement weather once again looming, the Cougars and Islanders (6-3) started with the singles matches. Junior Rocio Martin was the first to score, winning her fourth flight battle, 6-1, 6-1, over Maider Martin. The singles win is fifth straight for the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Elena Kordolaimi was the next to finish, with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Celia Rodriguez on court two. Charlotte Phillips then put the Cougars on the brink of victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Chelsea Horan in the sixth flight.
It wasn't long before Tina Rupert ensured the victory for Houston. The sophomore survived a tough challenge from Jelena Dzinic, 6-4, 6-3, to win the third flight and clinch the match.
Shortly after Rupert scored the clincher, No. 34 Despoina Vogasari finished off her top flight match, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) over Judit Vives.
With the result in hand, the teams did not finish court five, where Maria Cardenas held a lead. They also did not play for the doubles point.
Vogasari now has a team-high 21 singles victories this season, while Kordolaimi has earned 19 singles wins and is 9-1 in her last ten outings.
Houston is now 7-1 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
