Lantrip Strikes Out Career-High 12 in 9-1 Win
3/13/2015 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

The win lifted Houston's record to 11-7 and marked the third straight game the Cougars have come out on top as Buffalo fell to 3-8 on the year.
Lantrip (7.2,5,1,1,1,12) was dominant in his fifth start of 2015, improving to 4-1 with a career-high 12-strikeout effort in just 7.2 innings of work. The Livingston, Texas native allowed just one run on five hits and one walk in the winning performance.
Houston was patient at the plate and took advantage of six free passes and connected on 10 hits, leading to nine runs offensively - all of which were manufactured runs.
Junior Josh Vidales led the Cougars with a 3-for-3 effort and two RBI for his third-straight multi-hit game. He has now reached base in 21 straight games, dating back to 2014.
Freshman Connor Wong recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the year, with two hits, going 2-for-4 with two runs, while classmate Michael Wisz (0x3, 2 RBI) tallied two RBI on two groundouts.
Adding to the offensive mix was freshman Corey Julks and junior Justin Montemayor (1x3, R, RBI) with a base hit and RBI each. Freshman Zac Taylor (1x4, R) scored another run - making it 20 on the year for the newcomer, while junior Kyle Survance (1x3, 3 R, 2 SB) stole two bases to up his total to 15 on the year to accompany three runs scored. Junior Jacob Campbell (1x3, R, RBI) chipped in with a single and RBI and junior Chris Iriart scored a run.
Following Lantrip on the bump and out of the pen was freshman Aaron Fletcher (1.1,1,0,0,0,2) who fanned two in his 1.1 innings of relief.
Houston made it a 3-0 game early in the first inning after the Cougars took advantage of three walks and two hit-by-pitches and back-to-back RBI from Campbell and Wisz. With a three-run lead, Houston added to it with two more in the second on two hits, led by a two-run single off the bat of Vidales.
After a clean 1-2-3 inning by Lantrip on the bump, Houston plated yet another run for its third consecutive inning with a score, taking a 6-0 lead on Buffalo after Wong led off the frame with his second triple of the game followed by an RBI-groundout by Wisz - his second RBI of the night.
Houston would extend its lead to 7-0 with a single run in the seventh following a groundout by Iriart - scoring Survance, who reached on a single, stole second and took third on a single by Vidales.
Buffalo would crack the scoreboard with a lone run in the top of the eighth following two doubles in the frame, but Houston countered that effort with two final runs in the latter half of the eighth on RBI from Wisz and Julks - making in 9-1 Houston.
POSTGAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH Todd Whitting
On the pitching performance by Andrew Lantrip
"I thought Andrew Lantrip was outstanding. He was able to strike out a bunch of guys but he kept the pitch count low as well. I thought he pitched outstanding and we had, probably, the best night offensively. We had a ton of walks, a lot guys with RBI. I think most of our hits were to the opposite field. Overall, it was a good team effort."
On if there was a point where he thought that Lantrip had it
"No, you play it pitch-by-pitch. The way the game is, like we saw in Huntsville, the game can change and go in either direction, so you just have to keep your nose down and keep playing."
HOUSTON PITCHER Andrew Lantrip
On his 12 strikeouts
"I just attacked them with the fastball. As soon as I got them looking for a fastball, I hit attacked them with a slider to get them off balance."
On if there was a moment he knew he had a groove
"No, you just have to go out there and compete. You never want to get complacent and feel like you have it because that's when you slip and give up a double or a hit."
On if there was a thought process on how many guys he struck out
"No, I wasn't really worried about it. I was more worried about getting to the next guy and trying to compete."
