Trey Cumbie, a left-handed pitcher out of Lufkin, Texas, comes to Houston after an award-winning high school career at Lufkin, where he was tabbed an All-America selection, and an All-State and All-District honoree for the Panthers. READ MORE on Trey Cumbie
Q: When did you start playing baseball?
TC: I started playing baseball when I was about four years old. I just loved the game from the beginning. My dad introduced me to it.
Q: Have you always been a pitcher?
TC: I have always been a pitcher, but I also played outfield in high school.
Q: Do you have any favorite baseball memories?
TC: My favorite memory that comes to mind is winning the 12 and under World Series in Panama City.
Q: Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?
TC: I always put on my left sock on first.
Q: What would a former coach or teammate say about you in a few words?
TC: I'm the type of player that keeps to myself, does his own thing, but in a good way.
Q: What makes the University of Houston the place for you?
TC: University of Houston was the best fit for me. It's close to home, I like the coaching staff and I wanted to be a part of an up-and-coming program after its recent success.
Q: Do you have a role model you look up to in the sport?
TC: Clayton Kershaw.
Q: What are your strengths as a pitcher?
TC: I consider myself a competitor. I battle a lot once I'm on the mound.
Q: What are three things you would take on deserted island?
TC: I would take a fishing rod, small fishing boat and a football.
Q: Being a quarterback in high school, what made you decide to purse baseball in college?
TC: I just felt like I had a better chance to succeed at baseball at this level. I'm left handed and baseball is my first love.
Q: What are you most excited about this season?
TC: I'm looking forward to contributing as much as possible and helping the team win. Now that I don't play football, I'm able to focus on baseball year around.
