Baseball Drops Tough Midweek to Lamar

HOUSTON - Houston Baseball wasn't able to overcome a late Lamar rally as the Cougars dropped its first home game of the 2014 season, 4-2, to the Cardinals at Cougar Field Tuesday evening. With the loss, No. 21 Cougars fell to just 15-4 on the year and 11-1 at home, while Lamar improved to 14-9 on the year. Houston's 11 straight at home was snapped as the 11-0 mark was the best home mark since going 13-0 to open the 1989 season. Houston and Lamar tied in hits with eight apiece, but it was a three-run seventh inning that put the Cardinals over the Cougars late after Houston took a 2-0 lead. Leading the way offensively was senior Frankie Ratcliff (2x4) and sophomore Justin Montemayor (2x3) with two hits each, while sophomores Kyle Survance (0x4, RBI, SF) and Ashford Fulmer (1x4, RBI) drove in Houston's two RBI. Adding to the offense with hits were freshman Jordan Stading (1x3, R), junior Michael Pyeatt (1x3) and senior Casey Grayson (1x4), while senior Caleb Barker (0x2, R, 2 BB) walked twice and scored a run. Houston starter David Longville (5.2,2,1,1,0,4) went a career-long 5.2 innings and left with a win in hand after allowing just one run on two hits with four strikeouts, but Lamar's late rally wiped his win as he finished with the no-decision. Reliever senior Aaron Stewart (0.1,2,2,2,0,1) got a huge out in the sixth, but was touched up a bit to open the seventh and suffered the loss out of the pen, falling to 0-1 on the season. He surrendered two runs on two hits with one strikeout in 0.1 innings of work. It took four innings for either team to jump on board, but it was the Cougars who struck first with two runs on two hits, led by an RBI-single by Fulmer and a sacrifice fly by Survance. Longville continued to cruise until a one-out hit-by-pitch put just the second Lamar runner on base in the sixth. The Cardinals then used a double into right center to make it a 2-1 game. A stolen base moved the runner to third after Longville struck out the hitter for the second out. Stewart came in for a matchup situation and made three pitches for a strikeout looking to end the inning and keep Houston ahead at 2-1, moving into the latter half of the sixth. The Cardinals responded in the seventh with three runs on five hits. Also seeing action out of the pen was freshman Andrew Lantrip (0.1,3,1,1,0,0) and sophomore Bubba Maxwell (2.2,1,0,0,0,0), who pitched an impressive 2.2 innings out of the pen, allowing just one hit. Lamar made six pitching changes as reliever Lance Warren (2.1,1,0,0,0,3) was credited the win, tossing 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and three strikeouts. Danny Fernandez (1.0,0,0,0,0,1) earned the save.
