HOUSTON-The University of Houston baseball team faced a hot-hitting Memphis squad that pounded out 23 hits en route to a 15-3 win over the Cougars on Thursday evening in C-USA play at Cougar Field.
Houston fell to 17-31-1 overall and 5-16-1 in conference play, while Memphis improved to 27-26 and 12-10. Despite the loss on Thursday, Houston can still clinch the final spot in the C-USA Championship next week with either a win over the next two days or a Marshall loss at Tulane.
Senior Jake Runte belted his first homerun of the season on a 1-2 pitch to left field to open the sixth inning for Houston. He finished the evening 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Connecting on two hits for Houston was senior John Cannon (2x5) and sophomore Jonathan Davis (2x4, R). Sophomore Landon Appling's (1x1, R) single to open the game extended his reach-base streak to 17 straight games. Freshman Jesse Hoover (1x2, 2 BB) picked up his first career hit and walked twice, while freshmen Price Jacobs (1x3), Michael Pyeatt (1x4), and junior Chase Jensen (1x5, RBI) each tallied a hit.
Houston starter Austin Pruitt (1.1,7,5,5,0,1) allowed five runs on seven hits with one strikeout in the loss, falling to 3-4 on the year. The Cougars used five pitchers as sophomore Chase Wellbrock (0.2,4,4,4,1,0), freshmen Chris Morales (3.0,5,1,1,1,3), Logan Piper (1.0,2,2,2,2,0) and junior Ryan Bonnot (3.0,5,3,1,1,4) all saw action out of the pen. Morales and Bonnot each tossed a career-long 3.0 innings in relief and combined for seven strikeouts.
Memphis reliever Michael Wills (5.0,5,1,1,3,4) earned the win for the Tigers, allowing just one run on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Houston went up 1-0 in the first inning on a Jensen-RBI, plating Appling, who singled, but a nine-run second inning for Memphis put the game away. The Tigers went on to plate six more over the fifth, sixth and seventh frames.

Houston and Memphis will continue the three-game series on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Cougar Field before concluding on Saturday at 1 p.m.
