HOUSTON--Three early runs by UL-Lafayette proved to be enough as the University of Houston baseball team dropped its first road game of 2012, 3-1, to the Ragin' Cajuns on Tuesday night at Moore Field in Lafayette, La.
The Cougars dropped to 6-6 on the year with the loss, while UL-Lafayette improved to 7-5.
Houston saw itself down 2-0 after the first inning as UL-Lafayette plated two runs on two hits, a walk and a Cougar error.
The Cougars responded quickly in the next frame when junior Casey Grayson led off the inning with a double down the right field line, his second of the season. He was brought around to score on a single up the middle by senior John Cannon to make it a 2-1 game.
A third run by UL-Lafayette came in the third after a leadoff walk and a triple to put the Ragin' Cajuns up 3-1, which proved to be enough in the end.
Houston had a chance to take the lead in the seventh as Grayson led off with a single and was moved to third following a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but ULL was able to escape the jam and strand the Cougars. Another chance came in the eighth after a Ragin' Cajun error that allowed runners at first and second with no outs, but a strikeout and a double-play groundout ended any Cougar threat for the second straight inning.
Junior starter Austin Pruitt was lights out following the third frame, which included retiring 12 straight ULL hitters in the middle innings.
The righty tossed a career-high 8.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts for the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year.
Houston tagged eight hits for a game-high over ULL's six, led by Grayson's 2-for-3 effort with a run scored. Sophomore Landon Appling added a multi-hit game with two base knocks, while freshman Zack Gibson (1x4), senior Jake Runte (1x4), Cannon (1x4), and junior Taylor White (1x3) each contributed with a hit.
ULL reliever Cord Cockrell (3.2,2,0,0,1,3) earned the win, while Caleb Kellogg (2.0,3,0,0,0,2) picked up the save.
