HOUSTON - Despite a near season-best shooting performance, the University of Houston women's basketball team fell to Tulane by a score of 71-51 on Thursday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Senior guard Roxana Button led the Cougars with 18 points and a career-high five assists while freshman forward Amanda Lawson scored in double figures for the fourth-straight game with 10 points.
Houston shot 44 percent (20-of-46) from the field but was plagued by 21 turnovers as Tulane (18-5, 7-3) outscored the Cougars by a 25-7 margin in points off turnovers.
Tulane jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead to open the contest, but Button and freshman guard Danielle Parks answered with back-to-back 3-pointers to trim the deficit to 9-8 with 14:18 remaining.
After a five-minute scoring drought, Button took over, converting a fastbreak layup and following with another bomb to break a 10-2 Tulane run.
Button and Lawson combined for the next six points as the two teams traded baskets and Houston kept within striking distance at 23-19 with 4:21 left to play before the break.
However, the misfortunes for Houston before the half continued, as Tulane's Olivia Grayson drained a 3-pointer before the buzzer to cap a 14-4 Green Wave run for a 37-23 deficit at the break.
Tulane carried the momentum into the second half, quickly knocking down two buckets en route to the victory.
Button ended the night 6-of-11 from the field, 2-of-3 from downtown and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line while playing all 40 minutes for the seventh time this season. The Coppell, Texas, native scored in double figures for the 19th time in 22 contests.
Lawson was 5-of-11 from the field and handed out three helpers while also snagging three steals in 32 minutes.
Sophomore center Mae Woods added seven points and three rebounds.
The Cougars take to the road for their next contest against Memphis at 2 p.m., Sunday.
