MEMPHIS, Tenn. - An extended second-half drought sunk the University of Houston women's basketball team at Memphis on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Tigers, 69-41.
Senior guard Roxana Button led Houston with 14 points for her 20th double-digit scoring performance of the season, while freshman forward Amanda Lawson added seven points and 11 rebounds.
After limiting the league's top offense to just 28 percent shooting (11-of-40) in the opening half, the Cougars trailed by just nine points at 32-23 with 17:34 remaining before going scoreless for over seven minutes as the Tigers used a 17-0 run to push out to a 49-23 lead.
The Cougars took a quick 4-0 lead to kick off the contest but went scoreless over the next six minutes until Mae Woods knocked down a jumper to cut the Memphis lead to 11-6 at the 11:22 mark.
The Tigers would stretch their lead to 17-6 before Button knocked down a deep 3-pointer and Michelle White followed with a lay in to bring the Cougars to within six points.
Houston remained within seven points at 25-18 with 3:50 remaining in the first half but would go the rest of the half without a field goal as the Tigers took a 30-20 lead into the break.
The Cougars struggled all afternoon with an aggressive Memphis defense, shooting just 20 percent (11-of-55) for the contest. Houston also couldn't match the size in the post, losing the rebound battle by a 62-35 margin while being outscored in second-chance points, 17-6.
Houston remains on the road to face East Carolina at 7 p.m., Thursday in Greenville, N.C.
