HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's soccer team closed non-conference action Friday evening with a 2-0 defeat of Louisiana-Lafayette at Robertson Stadium. This win marked the third straight for the Cougars as they head into conference play.
"Wins build confidence, but we still have things to work on before we open up conference Friday" head coach Susan Bush said. "We looked good in this game. We strung passes together and had all kinds of different chances. We weren't as predictable, but now we just have to finish on more of our 22 shots."
Freshman Kelsey Zamora registered her third goal of the season to open the scoring in the 27th minute. Fellow freshman midfielder Sharis Lachappelle sent the feed to Zamora on the left wing before the Victoria, Texas, native drove it past Ragin' Cajun keeper Amanda Moorefield for the goal.
The Houston defense was outstanding in the first half, limiting Louisiana-Lafayette to only two shots, neither of which was on goal. At the end of the first half, Houston held a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, Houston matched its first-half output to bring the score to 2-0, when freshman Alexis Weaver scored her second goal of the season. Receiving the feed from Sami Sackos, Weaver was left with one defender to beat. After applying a nifty move to elude the defender, she punched it past the goalie into the top-right corner of the net for the final 2-0 score.
In the goal for the Cougars, Cami Koski recorded her third consecutive shutout. Koski gave much of the credit to the defense not allowing the opposition to take quality shots. Louisiana-Lafayette was limited to four shots and was unable to get a shot on goal.
"I did what I needed to do," Koski said. "For the most part the defense pretty much kept me clear, not allowing any direct shots on goal."

Houston begins its conference slate as it hosts No. 11 Memphis at 7 p.m., Friday at Robertson Stadium.
"Memphis is on a hot streak," Bush said. "They're ranked No. 11. It's always a fierce game with them. We're expecting nothing, but the best from them. We're happy it's at home, but we know it's going to be a tough game and a tough weekend."
