Houston - University of Houston head baseball coach Todd Whitting announced Wednesday afternoon that the Cougars will play fall scrimmages against Rice and Texas during their fall practice slate.
Houston will play host to the Rice Owls on Oct. 9 at Cougar Field before traveling to Austin for a scrimmage against Texas on Oct. 16. First pitch for the scrimmage against Rice has not been announced, while the contest against the Longhorns is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
"As a staff we decided that we wanted to play a couple fall scrimmages with the number of new players that we have coming in, not only to our program but to Division I baseball in general," Whitting said. "It is really important for us to get a few games under our belt in the fall, as opposed to the spring."
The Cougars will begin their fall practice schedule on Sept. 6 and will wrap up the early practice period with the trip to Austin.
"I am excited about the fall scrimmages," Whitting added. "We have two great opponents and the kids are going to be excited to play them. Fall practice can get a little mundane and old so to be able to add some competition will help pick it up a little."
