Matt Creel Named To C-USA Baseball All-Academic Team

JACKSON, Miss. - University of Houston junior Matt Creel was named to the Conference USA Baseball All-Academic Team the league office announced on Monday. The award is voted on by the league's sports information directors and consists of 13 student-athletes.
This is the second selection to the All-Academic Team for the Greenwell Springs, La., native. The psychology major maintained a 3.85 GPA in his second season at UH. He was also selected to the team last season as a sophomore after posting a 4.0 GPA.
The selection to the All-Academic Team adds to the list of academic honors for Creel. He is a two-time Team Academic MVP and C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal recipient. In addition, he has been named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Dean's List.
Creel has seen action this season as a pitcher and designated hitter. On the mound, he is 5-5 in four starts and 18 appearances with a 4.85 ERA. He has struck out 36 batters in 55.2 innings of work. In 36 starts as the designated hitter and one in left field, Creel is batting .313 with 13 doubles, one triple and one home run. He also has 28 RBIs and three stolen bases.
Creel is the program's seventh selection to the All-Academic team in the last five seasons and joins Jimmy Cesario as the only two Cougars to be named to the team twice.
For a student-athlete to earn a nomination to the team, he must earn and maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or better and be a starter or have a key reserve role on the team.

Houston will head to Pearl, Miss., for the 2011 Conference USA Baseball Championship presented by Trustmark, May 25-28. They will open play against East Carolina at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
